When he arrived in Lincoln-on-Marsh, the village nearest Dixon’s country house, Robert was tempted to ride directly to Dixon’s and storm in. But he’d made good time, and it was early afternoon. Guests wouldn’t begin arriving for a few hours, and he was sure he looked like a man who had made what should have been a two-day journey in one by stopping only long enough to change horses. He didn’t want to take the time to explain everything to Sir Lionel Westin, even though he was certain his friend would help and Hensley House was close by.

Robert finally settled on taking a room at the inn and ordering a bath. He discovered that almost anything could be had if one was willing to pay an outrageous amount, including someone to clean and press the only suit of clothes one had brought and bring a freshly starched cravat. By the time the party would be starting, Robert looked more fashionably disheveled than travel worn. He turned down the offer of dinner and went to find another horse.
